Variations of the PzKpfw III and Pzkpfw IV were the most numerous armored fighting vehicles in the Panzer divisions. The Pzkpfw IV, depicted here in a late model configuration with 75mm gun. The undergunned and underarmored early versions were hastily upgraded to counter the threat of the Russian T-34/76 which sported such technological improvements as sloped armor, ultra-wide tracks (to spread the load), and a 76mm gun that could engage German tanks beyond a range where they were capable of returning effective fire.
